US/UK/Canadian schools - I’m available for virtual visits with elementary, middle, and high school students in either school or library settings. Note that How To Free A Jinn is best suited for grades 7-10.
My proposed topics include but are not limited to:
The Power of Storytelling: I will share my journey to publication and describe the importance of understanding is within our control (patience, resilience and reaching out for support) and what is not (timing, market demands, editorial alignment). Sample activity: Students create their own story individually or as a group.
Normalizing neurodivergence: A discussion of how 1 in 5 children/adults are neurodivergent, and how self-acceptance goes hand in hand with allistic (non-neurodivergent) individuals unpacking their own internalized ableism. Sample Activity: Students can investigate what internalized ableism can look/sound like.
Fantasy Books and #ownvoices: Fantasy books drawing from our lived ancestral, cultural and spiritual heritage can be a very powerful tool for healing and empowerment. Sample Activity: Students can create a fantasy world based on their own heritage and faith.
Dismantling Islamophobia: The modern day media propaganda machine has dehumanised Muslims for far too long. Our stories about our complex, joyful, bittersweet lives are an antidote. Sample Activity: Share favourite stories about Muslims.
Presentations can be crafted to best suit the needs of the classroom!
